Filipe Portela
Education and teaching
Filipe Portela is an Information Systems engineer with a master's degree in Information Systems Engineering and Management and a PhD in Information Systems and Technologies from the University of Minho. He is an integrated researcher at the ALGORITMI Research Centre, where he completed his postdoctoral work, and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Systems of the University of Minho's School of Engineering. In 2025, he received the EEUM Teaching Merit Award.
Research
With more than two hundred indexed scientific publications, his research covers artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, decision support, gamification, pervasive systems, business intelligence, data mining and knowledge discovery. He is the author of technical books, holds a Data Science patent, and serves as principal investigator and manager of several research, development and innovation projects.
Innovation and entrepreneurship
He works as an editor and co-organiser of international conferences, workshops, books and scientific journals, and is a co-founder of ARTIIS and ICPEC. In 2018, he founded IOTECH — Innovation on Technology, where he is CEO and Director of R&D&I, advancing the transfer of technical and scientific knowledge to organisations and society.
Leadership and society
He is Vice-President of the Baixo Ave Business Association, responsible for New Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and training, a mentor in the Famalicão MADE-IN network, and a member of national and international networks and associations. His work is dedicated to creating intelligent and sustainable solutions through a continuous connection between academia, industry and society.
